Had this happen with Doritos when I was a kid (20 years ago) and I sent a letter to Frito-Lay. I received an apology and a book of coupons for free product. It seems to me that this kind of thing, while not being common, happens enough to not raise a company's BS meter when they get a very specific complaint about it.
